Mira, star of Ami Blackwelder's The Mers: A Mermaid Dystopian ~ Interview with Kay Dee, plus a Giveaway

Hello Mira, star of The Mers: A Mermaid Dystopian by Ami Blackwelder. Welcome and thank you for spending the day at Ravencraft’s Romance Realm and for answering a few questions about your story as told by Ami.

We’re curious about Mers and look forward to hearing all about these ‘beings’ and your story. So, let’s get started…

KDR ~ Mira, tell us about the Mers ~ who they are and where they live.

Mira ~ The MERS are a wonderful family of creatures that were once human, but who evolved webbed features after the Great Deluge. Peaceful and loving, they are the only family I know. 

KDR ~ Peaceful and Loving beings…WOW, they come across as exceptional.

It sounds like you live in the future ~ one hundred years from now ~ what does the Earth look like? AND what was The Great Deluge?

Mira ~ AH! I had to ask Nerin, my best friend, about this one. The Great Deluge is something he knows a lot about! After the flooding, the Earth went underwater. Most land masses could no longer inhabit humans. Most humans died. But some humans survived, while others developed webbed features.  

KDR ~ Nerin sounds like a knowledgeable friend. Tell us about him and what role he plays in your life? 

Mira ~ Nerin is my best friend, my confidante, and eventually something more. Without him I don’t know if I would have ever survived the world of humans! AKA: Remantville!

KDR ~ Tell us a little about Liberty Shores. 

Mira ~ Liberty Shores is where I grew up, where all THE MERS grew up and it is the only home I have ever known! Mostly water, there are land pieces sporadically found through-out Liberty Shores and connected by bridges. But I long to venture off across the boundary border-line and investigate the world of humans!

 

KDR ~ What is the Forbidden Land? Why is it called that?

Mira ~ Remnantville is forbidden because humans long ago declared it to be so. To keep the peace, the humans and MERS from fighting, a treaty was made declaring that humans remain where Jersey once sat and MERs remained where NY/Ellise Island sat.

KDR ~ Seems extreme…but if it works to keep the peace, so be it, right.

There are Pirates…what are they like?

Mira ~ Oooo! Pirates are dangerous! They kidnap THE MERS and sell them to the Magi!

KDR ~ Oh my! Pirates kidnap and sell…Geesh. No wonder there’s panic.

There are also Magi. Who or what are they, and what are they to you, Mira?

Mira ~ I only know all of this because Nerin taught me...but the Magi buy THE MERS from the Pirates and use their eyes, skin, hair for amulets, wigs, and special cremes. When I learned that THE MERs were killed by Pirates and sold to Magi I just about lost it!

 

KDR ~ Holy craps…The Mers are not only kidnapped, but killed. No wonder there’s panic and fear.

So, who are the Aristos? (Good guys I hope)

Mira ~ The Aristos are who buy these MER gifts to enhance their beauty, skin quality, or luck in life. Aristos is short for Aristocrats and they control Remnantville (the land of humans). The leaders of the Aristos are the Royal Family. If the Aristos did not want for MER goods, then Pirates and Magi would not kill them!

 

KDR ~ OH…Aristos are the REAL bad guys here. Makes sense.

What inspires, motivates, or influences you? How do you fit?

Mira ~ My need to know who I am. Am I a MER? A Human? or What? My first journey is really about discovering who I am...

 

KDR ~ What’s in store for the next book in the Mer Chronicles series, your continuing story? 

Mira ~ In the next book, I will be battling my half-brother as he fights to keep his father’s lands and castle. I will not let him destroy the MERS! The apple does not fall far from the tree.

KDR ~ So, you half-brother must be an Aristos…

Tell us what it’s like to work with Ami? Is she getting the details correct?

Mira ~ AH! Ami must keep notes on her computer and usually drinks lots of tea to keep the details correct.

KDR ~ <smile> Love how you describe Ami.

Is there anything else you’d like us to know about your story?

Mira ~ The reader will be in for one great adventure!

KDR ~ Never a doubt in my mind…not with what they say about your story-teller…
